The Royal Derby Hospital was officially opened by The Queen and then Duke of Edinburgh on 1st April 2010 following a £334 million transformation by Skanska turning it into the most advanced hospital in the East Midlands. The hospital has 1,159 acute beds, 35 operating theatres, 200 single en suite rooms and 4-bed bays for patients on its wards. The hospital is also a major teaching centre for the University of Nottingham medical school.
In late 2019 the site required a partial cylinder refit to maintain security control in key areas. Due to the vast size of the hospital, an intelligent system was required, split between two Grand Masterkeys tailored to suit the exact needs of staff, without compromising the overall security of the premises. The cylinders had to be finished in Satin Nickle and available in a range of sizes and specifications to suit the varying door types.
Skanska enlisted the experience of W.G. Pollard Ltd of Chesterfield, who has been providing security solutions across the country for over 40 years. Due to the nature of the project a site survey was carried out to locate every door and determine the cylinder type required. Once determined and the principle design of the master suiting was created, W.G. Pollard Ltd tasked global leader in the design and manufacture of high-security mechanical locks DOM UK to supply a Masterkey system which would meet all of the customer’s needs.
DOM suggested using their most popular mechanical cylinder system Sigma Plus, as the mechanism is trademark protected and features six solid pin locks and lateral profile pins which make it almost impossible for an unauthorised person to gain access via common forms of attack such as; drilling, bumping and picking. Sigma Plus features high manipulation protection with up to 19 locking authorisation queries per key and comes in many different cylinder variants to suit a huge range of applications.
The DOM Cylinders and keys were supplied in unassembled form to W.G. Pollard Ltd, so in-house assembly could be carried out by their experienced master suiting department. This enabled the offering of same-day services to the client throughout the lifecycle of the new masterkey system.
