Ashton Old Baths is a historic space reinvented for the small and medium-sized businesses in the digital and creative sector. Formerly a Victorian public bath house, the iconic landmark has been rejuvenated into a space for a progressive community of big-thinkers and world-changers. The central hub which has been installed into the original walls of the iconic building is an architectural marvel and houses an impressive range of private workspaces designed to nurture creativity and growth.
The grade II-listed building had been left derelict for over 40 years, with extensive decay and damage to the structure. This led to the building being put on English Heritage's ‘At Risk Register’, as one of the first municipal swimming pools to be built in the UK, so attention to detail and use of appropriate building materials and finishes was key to the seamless upgrade of the facades where old and new sit side by side.
H.H. Smith & Sons Co. Ltd construction were awarded the prestigious refurbishment which required both internal and external repairs to the building fabric, as well as installing the free-standing cedar wood-clad pod to transform the former swimming pool building into a state-of-the-art business hub. For the buildings locking requirements, H.H. Smith enlisted the help of Red Chilli Projects.
Red Chilli Projects Ltd of Cheshire provide a comprehensive range of standard and bespoke architectural ironmongery and construction solutions, including commercial door hardware and security, access control, washroom products, balustrade systems, signage solutions, glazed curtain walling, timber doorset solutions and additional products for the built environment.
Red Chilli chose to install manufacturer and distributor of high quality mechanical and electrical security systems, DOM-UK’s bestselling Masterkey system; Sigma Plus. The cylinder mechanism features six solid pin locks and lateral profile pins which make it almost impossible for an unauthorised person to gain access via common forms of attack such as; drilling, bumping and picking. The profile has many different cylinder variants available ideal for a huge range of applications, in this case, the cylinders were 30-30 euro profile cylinders with turns in a satin nickel finish.
The project was funded by a collection of stakeholders including; PlaceFirst, Tameside Council and the English Regional Development Fund. Both the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund were also associated with this project.
The Ashton Old Baths Data Centre was awarded the “Data Centre Architecture Award” for 2021 which saw strong competition from countries across the world.
