Choosing the right profession is an important and future-defining decision. Every year, DOM educates young people in various areas of business.

Working alongside the DOM team prepares you for dealing with modern technologies and gives you all the necessary expertise to succeed in the professional world.

Since April, DOM UK has been joined by Salomé Nicolas, an intern from the Institute of Higher Education Sainte-Marie, located in Bourges in central France. Salomé has been an excellent addition to the team, bringing youthful knowledge and a passion for her studies, which focus on International Trade.

We interviewed Salomé as part of her course to find out about her experience at DOM UK and in the UK in general.

What made you want to do an internship with DOM?

“In the context of my studies in International Trade, in my first year, it is custom to do an abroad internship of 9-weeks with a company who has global business presence. After searching for a suitable company, a friend from my second year, gave me the contact of Lyn Dyson (DOM UK Director) and told me that this company is suitable for what I want to do. When researching the company, I noticed that DOM has many relations with other companies in Europe, so an ideal fit. I would like to learn about marketing, customers and supplier relationship management, logistics and all the things that make a company successful. This is why it seemed wise to me to work with DOM for my first experience.”

What is your student background?

“I’m a French student, so I know that French and English schools aren’t the same, but, last year, in 2023, I passed my final exam, which is called the BAC or Baccalauréat, so that opened the door of higher study. As a student I also found a student job to support my studies. During weekends and holidays, I work as a supermarket cashier.”

What skills and attributes do you feel you bring to the role?

“With my studies, I have learned many things about how to develop a business abroad, so if the company wants to sell their products in a new country, I can give an insight into this decision. I’m also a very openminded person and I know how to use social media and internet, so if the company wants to present their business in a modern way, I can help them with that. I’ve also learned about logistics, so I’m able to calculate costs. I can also do prospection to find new clients for example.”

How do you like to spend your free time?

“Outside of the company, I take advantage of being in England to walk around and visit the different things there are to do. I already have visted London and I’m sure that I will go again, it’s an amazing city. I also try to taste as many English foods as I can do because I like to eat. Soon, I should try going to the pub. I also go every two weeks, near Cambridge to see my aunt, my uncle, and my cousins, because they live in England. I would also like to make new friends.”

How are you finding working in the UK?

“Working in the UK is very interesting, because it allows me to know about corporate culture in another country. Moreover, at DOM UK, I find that people are very nice and helpful, they know how to be serious as well as funny. Throughout my first year I learned that England was known for being very strict in the workplace, but I think that times have changed, and mentalities are evolving. It’s really a great experience that I’m having at DOM UK. Carrying out an internship at DOM UK as your first experience in the working world is really something that I recommend.”

What would you like to do in the future?

“After my study, I am still undecided exactly what I want to do. I think is very difficult to decide when you are young, while there are so many interesting jobs that exist. One thing that I am sure to do after my study is travel the world as much as I can. Because, to me, travelling the world is the best way to learn many things. When you travel, you feel so small facing the diversity and extent of the world. But, if I must choose something as a first job, maybe a role in marketing, merchandising or human resources.”
