DOM UK has a history of training interns from across Europe in many different roles across the company, from customer service to production and dispatch. In mid-2024, we welcomed our first marketing intern, recognising the value of providing young professionals with opportunities to develop their skills and gain real-world experience. In return, we benefit from the fresh perspectives and up-to-date knowledge they bring, particularly in areas such as social media and video technology, which play a key role in our marketing strategy.
Hortense Pontonnier, age 20, joins us as part of her second year of a post-A-Level course in International Trade at IES Sainte-Marie in Bourges, central France. Although only with us for five weeks, she has quickly become a valued part of the team. During her internship, Hortense has had the opportunity to gain insight into various departments, helping her explore different career paths as she considers her future.
As her internship comes to an end and she prepares to return to France to continue her studies, we asked Hortense to reflect on her experience at DOM UK, share her impressions of the UK in general, and discuss how this opportunity has influenced her next career steps.
What made you want to do an internship with DOM?
“This internship at DOM UK interested me enormously because it is an international company, which fits perfectly with my training in international business. Working in a global environment would not only allow me to see if this field is a good fit for me, but also to develop essential professional skills in an international setting. In addition, it is a great opportunity to improve my language level, which is essential for my professional future.”
What is your student background?
“I obtained a general baccalaureate, with honours, with a specialisation in mathematics and English. After that, I spent a year in accounting in Paris. Last year, I started my training with a BTS International Trade (CI) at the Institute Sainte-Marie in Bourges, which perfectly matches my professional aspirations and allows me to develop specific skills in the field of international trade.”
What skills and attributes do you feel you bring to the role?
“I am young and French, which can bring a fresh and different perspective, especially in an environment where diversity of opinions and approaches is an asset. Regarding social media, I have a strong ability to manage them, which can be a real advantage for a company looking to grow on these platforms. Additionally, I am autonomous and always eager to learn new skills, allowing me to quickly and effectively adapt to the company’s needs. Finally, I am serious about my tasks and committed to delivering high-quality work. I believe these skills and attributes enable me to contribute positively to the team and bring new, creative ideas.”
How do you like to spend your free time?
“In my free time, I enjoy cooking and sharing moments with my family and friends. I also love relaxing by listening to music and going shopping with my friends. Horseback riding is another passion of mine, and I’ve been doing it since I was very young, often participating in competitions on Sundays. Additionally, drawing is something that really soothes me, and whenever I have the time, it’s a great way for me to unwind.”
How are you finding working in the UK?
“Working in the UK has been a great experience so far. I appreciate the professional environment and the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, which has helped me grow both personally and professionally. The work culture is dynamic and fast-paced, which I find motivating and stimulating. I’ve also enjoyed exploring the different aspects of British culture outside of work, which has made my experience even more enriching. Overall, I’m excited to continue learning and contributing to the team here.”
What would you like to do in the future?
“In the future, I would like to continue developing in the field of commerce, although I’m not certain I will remain exclusively in marketing. I’m open to exploring other areas depending on my experiences and evolution within the sector. Marketing seems very relevant to me because it offers great diversity, combining a variety of skills, from languages to mathematics. It’s a dynamic field that allows for travel and movement, which I find particularly appealing. I’m excited by the idea of working on different aspects of a business while constantly developing new skills.”
