What is a Master Key System?

A Master Key System is a hierarchical keying solution designed to provide controlled access to multiple doors within a building. It enables building owners, facility managers, and employees to efficiently manage access, improving security and convenience. This system reduces the need for multiple keys, cuts down on key replacement costs, and ensures that authorised personnel can access any room when required.

At DOM UK, we offer a wide selection of customisable security cylinder locks that can be integrated into bespoke master key systems, tailored to meet your specific security needs. Our scalable solutions enhance building management by providing superior access control, streamlining security, and offering flexibility for diverse applications. Whether you're looking to secure a single building or multiple locations, our expert partner network is here to design the perfect system for you.

What Are the Advantages of a Master Key System?

Convenience:
A Master Key System simplifies building management by enabling building owners or facility managers to access multiple areas with just one key. This reduces the need to carry numerous keys and streamlines daily operations, making it easier to manage access across your premises.

Control:
Master Key Systems provide precise access management, allowing keys to be programmed for specific areas. Staff can be granted access only to the rooms they need, while management retains full control over the entire building. This level of control ensures enhanced security and efficient access management.

Security:
DOM UK offers high-security cylinder locks, with keys that can only be duplicated through authorised DOM dealers. This ensures that only those with legitimate access can obtain duplicate keys, providing maximum security and peace of mind for your premises.

Cost-Effectiveness:
Lost or stolen keys can be easily and affordably replaced, as DOM keys are quickly duplicated by an authorised DOM dealer or directly by DOM UK. This makes master key systems a cost-effective and practical solution for maintaining security without incurring significant costs for replacement keys.

Efficiency:
A well-designed Master Key System enhances productivity by streamlining access management. Employees can quickly and securely access the areas they need, without delays, all while maintaining the highest level of security. This ensures smooth operations and better overall efficiency within your organisation.

Different Master Key System Types

Master Key System

A Master Key System is perfect for small to medium-sized businesses that need to manage access to various areas while maintaining security. This hierarchical system allows top-level keyholders, such as a Managing Director, to access all areas, while restricting access to specific zones for employees or staff. DOM UK's Master Key Systems are fully customizable and can incorporate any of our high-security DOM security cylinder locks, all operated by a single key. This ensures both streamlined access and robust security across your premises, simplifying building management without compromising safety.

Grand Master Key System

A Grand Master Key (GMK) System is designed for large organisations that require a well-structured access control solution. This advanced hierarchy provides top-level access for senior management, while offering tiered access to other departments and employees based on their roles.

A typical GMK System includes three levels:

  • Level 1 – Grand Master Key (GMK): Unlocks all cylinders across all sites, providing complete access for top-level management.

  • Level 2 – Master Key (MK): Unlocks all cylinders within a specific building or site, typically used by department heads or managers.

  • Level 3 – Sub-Master Key (SMK): Unlocks specific areas or departments, ensuring restricted access for staff and teams.

In addition to these levels, each cylinder comes with a unique key for individual access, ensuring a secure and controlled environment. DOM UK’s Grand Master Key Systems offer flexibility and security for large facilities, streamlining management while maintaining robust control over who can access each area.

Common Entrance Systems

Common Entrance Systems are ideal for multi-unit buildings such as apartment complexes or halls of residence, where individuals need access to shared entry points without gaining access to private units. These systems provide secure entry keys specifically for main entry doors, ensuring residents and staff can access common areas without compromising the privacy of individual units.

This system is particularly useful for maintenance staff, delivery companies, and other service personnel who require access to shared spaces such as hallways and lobbies. In addition, Common Entrance cylinders can be seamlessly integrated into a larger Master Key System, offering an added layer of convenience and control for building managers.

Keyed to Differ

A Keyed to Differ (KTD) cylinder is designed to be operated exclusively by its unique key, offering individual security for each lock. While each cylinder remains secure, access can also be granted through relevant master keys within the system, allowing for flexible and controlled access across multiple areas. This setup is perfect for scenarios where individual security is paramount, while still maintaining the convenience and structure of a broader Master Key System.

Keyed Alike

Keyed Alike (KA) cylinders allow multiple locks to be operated by the same key, streamlining access management and enhancing convenience. Ideal for systems where several locks need to be opened with a single key, KA cylinders can be incorporated alongside master keys to create a tailored access solution. This flexibility ensures that users can efficiently manage access to different areas while maintaining the control and security provided by a Master Key System.
