Clutch Security Cylinder Lock

  • Can always be overridden from the outside

Clutch, or 'anti-barricade,' cylinders are engineered for secure accommodation, providing safety and privacy. They feature a security cylinder lock that can be locked from the inside with a thumb turn but overridden from the outside with a key, ensuring controlled access. For example, in hospitals, the mechanism allows staff entry even if a patient tries to block access.

'Clutch' is now available on all mechanical systems and smart lock cylinders.

Classroom Security Cylinder Lock

  • Can always be overridden from the outside
  • Cannot be locked with a thumb turn from the inside, only unlocked

Classroom cylinders offer enhanced security for lockable doors. They prevent accidental locking by allowing only unlocking from the inside, promoting safety and accessibility. This design ensures that students cannot lock themselves in, maintaining control while allowing keyholders quick access from outside.

Martyn’s Law and the Importance of Clutch Cylinders

With the introduction of Martyn’s Law (Protect Duty), the specification of secure locking systems is becoming increasingly important in public and educational spaces. Under this legislation, clutch cylinders are expected to become the preferred—and in some cases, mandatory—choice for settings such as classrooms, offices, and public venues.

Why Clutch Cylinders?

Clutch cylinders provide a significant safety advantage by ensuring the locking mechanism engages only when the key is fully inserted and turned. This feature:

  • Prevents Accidental Lockouts: Minimises disruptions in high-traffic environments.
  • Enhances Emergency Safety: Allows for quick and secure locking during lockdown situations without compromising the ability to exit safely.
  • Supports Compliance: Meets the stringent security standards outlined in Martyn’s Law.
